An intermediate-level course dedicated to the remapping of Electronic Control Units (ECUs) for gasoline-powered vehicles. This intensive 1-day training program (8 hours) is designed for professionals who already possess basic knowledge of engine management systems and wish to expand their skills in the analysis and modification of calibration files.

The course combines theory and hands-on practice using real-world case studies, enabling participants to understand the key management strategies of modern gasoline engines and apply safe Stage 1 modifications using specialized tools and software.

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of gasoline engine operation.

  • Familiarity with Electronic Control Units (ECUs) and file reading/writing procedures.

  • Basic experience using programming tools and map editing software.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the operating principles of the main management strategies used in modern gasoline engines.

  • Analyze the key tables and maps found in a turbocharged gasoline ECU.

  • Use calibration software such as StageX to identify and modify relevant maps.

  • Interpret data collected during performance testing and diagnostic procedures.

  • Understand the relationship between engine load, engine torque, and boost pressure.

  • Perform safe modifications aimed at achieving a Stage 1 calibration.

Morning Session (09:00 – 13:00)

Fundamentals of Gasoline Engines and Electronic Engine Management

  • Introduction to the electronic management of modern gasoline engines.

  • Operating principles of the gasoline internal combustion engine.

  • Four-stroke engine operating cycle:

    • Intake

    • Compression

    • Combustion and expansion

    • Exhaust

  • Fundamental engine management parameters:

    • Lambda

    • Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT)

    • Ignition timing

    • Manifold pressure and air mass flow (MAP / MAF)

    • Engine speed (RPM)

  • Analysis of engine knock:

    • Causes

    • Consequences

    • Protection and prevention strategies

  • Importance of octane rating in high-performance engines.

Lunch Break (13:00 – 14:00)

Afternoon Session (14:00 – 18:00)

ECU Map Analysis and Calibration Strategies

  • Introduction to turbocharged gasoline ECU calibration.

  • Practical case study on a Bosch MG1 ECU.

  • Analysis of the main management maps:

    • Maximum Air Charge

    • Maximum Indicated Torque

    • Requested Engine Load

  • Relationship between engine load, engine torque, and boost pressure.

  • Torque request and torque control strategies.

  • Torque limiter management.

  • Introduction to turbocharger control strategies:

    • Target boost pressure

    • Boost pressure limiters

    • Turbo system control and diagnostics

  • Practical use of StageX for map identification and modification.

  • Comparison between original and modified files.

  • Best practices and safety procedures for Stage 1 modifications.

  • Final technical discussion and Q&A session.
